A few months back I was part of admission team in the college. During those 2 months i got to meet students and parents of different personalities, castes, religion, social background, few came in pairs (friends) or in group, few came alone. One case was of two friends and both of them seek admission in the college, both had good percentage in 12th. One of the friends was SC+upper middle class and another was General+lower middle class. General+lower middle class though managed to get a few percent high but she wasn’t eligible for scholarship provided by central government for ‘उत्थान’ of students. I suggested her to go for the scholarship offered by state government for economically weaker students. I don’t know if she could manage to get it as state scholarship are matter of sheer luck.
Anyways then came one Jain student from well to do family. He asked me about scholarship and i told him that government don’t have any scholarship for students who are economically good and who are not SC/ST and the next thing he said was “who said I am not SC? Seeing my puzzled expression he said “You don’t really have to be SC to get SC certificate, I know how to fetch it”.
Then there was one student of the college who was SC and hence getting scholarship from central government and after every 6 month he had one destination ready to spend his holiday with the scholarship money. Did government give money to spend on holiday? Yeah why should generals have all the fun of holidaying? One of the students in one college of U.P. lost his life due to excessive intake of drugs, that student was from Kashmir who was enjoying full scholarship from state. Did state government facilitated scholarship for drugs? Now why should infidels have all the fun of intoxication?
I don’t know if Rohith Vemula was SC or BC. I don’t know if he also managed to fetch SC certificate like that Jain guy. I don’t know if he misused his scholarship money on beer, beef party or not but one thing is certain that in the name of brining equality in the society, our politicians and media is working on widening the gap b/w SC and general, Hindu and Muslim, Kashmir and rest of Bharat, North-east and rest of Bharat, Hindi Speaking and rest of Bharat, South and north Bharat.
If organisation don’t earn profit for long run then we generally review it and bring necessary changes in the working of plan and try to find loopholes. From almost past 60 years we have provision of reservation in higher education but despite of that the SC/ST of not only my village but of entire Bharat are living in same economic condition (except lucky few) but no government have ever thought of bringing required changes or review it except for increasing the number of castes under reservation on the basis of power those castes enjoy. And the best example of was inclusion of Jaat in OBC to get the candy of reservation, another example is recent where Patel of Gujarat demanded reservation because they have big population to disturb the machinery of state.
So am I advocating the scraping of reservation? Certainly not but yes it needs to be reviewed, the castes which are getting undue benefit under reservation should be scrapped from it and instead of providing it in higher education, it should be provided only from nursery to 12th, after which scholarship should be provided on the basis of ones knowledge and skills. I mean how a child is suppose to reach in college (where they get scholarship) if he/she didn’t get opportunity to get education in good school? Yes there are government school with minimal tuition fee but there is no use of such schools if they don’t provide the kind of education which is provided in private schools which charge fee to create a big whole in pockets but provide good enough education.
